Branding for a UK Cycling Festival Promoting Community and Creativity
Nine leading designers & artists from around the world were asked to create their own flag. Interpreting their passion for cycling in their own distinctive way. The flags were then exhibited from 21st – 29th September, at the North Bar, Harrogate, Yorkshire during the Championships.
The Challenge
We were approached to develop an identity system for the festival which could be utilised across multiple platforms, printed material while acting as a key promotional tool and further elevating the creatives taking part. The identity needed to pay tribute to cycle, and flags alike.
The collaboration with renown artists, designers was a big focal point to the festival, with each creative person designing their own flag which would then be auctioned off for charity. As a result, we needed to develop a marketing and social system which would allow for the promotion of these people.
The Identity
Print Design
The festival required a number of printed materials alongside the identity such as poster and ticket designs, as well as larger collateral in the form of billboards, and smaller assets in the form of stickers. Taking from the experiments within the identity tests and development we expanded on the existing system creating a number of designs which could be adapted to the needs of the festival.
Social Design
Due to the collaborative nature of the cycling festival, it meant a number of widely regarded creative people were involved in designing a flag to be auctioned for charity. This was something the team at HHH wanted to shout about.
We developed a series of designs which could be utilised to promote key artists, or designers, along with announcements.
Apparel & Merch
Where would a festival be without with random selection of merchandise for eager attendees to grab and take home.
While not a core deliverable, or ask from the team, we wanted to create some additional designs which could be placed onto Bags and T-Shirts to show the fluidity of the brand system but mainly because who doesn’t love a cool looking totebag?

THE IDENTITY
We took the opportunity to create a logotype which utilised kinetic type experiments as a starting point. Within the animations, we incorporated the 1:1 ratio movement of cyclists when peddling, and the fabric of a flag in breeze, and also looked to maintain the aesthetics of a mechanical system.
